Chapter 10

Awaiting their arrival was Georgiana Darcy, a pleasant looking young woman with a sweet smile on her doll-like face. Kitty liked her instantly, and tried to remember what she had been told about Mr. Darcy’s younger sister. She was very accomplished, to be sure, and had a lovely disposition – in short, she was everything a young lady of any quality should be.

Kitty was resolved to ignore the insecurity that swelled up within her. Perhaps they could be friends despite Kitty’s disadvantages. From the smile on the young woman’s face, Kitty certainly hoped that it could be true.

“Miss Bennet!” Georgiana’s happy greeting echoed through the courtyard as soon as Kitty’s alighted from the carriage, and Mr. Darcy’s sister rushed over to greet her. She clasped Kitty’s hands in hers and kissed her quickly on the cheek. “You are most welcome to Pemberley, Miss Bennet. Lizzy has told me so much about you, and I have been desperate to meet you properly ever since the wedding!” Georgiana’s effusive welcome was more than Kitty had been prepared for, and she felt her cheeks flushing with embarrassment at the overwrought greeting. She paused briefly, searching for any sign that Miss Darcy was mocking her, but when she could find none, she finally allowed herself to smile.

“I thank you for your welcome, I have heard so much about Pemberley and about you, Miss Darcy, but I fear that the information I was given has fallen short of preparing me for the reality of both!” Kitty stammered the words, hoping that her compliment would be received properly. Miss Darcy blushed prettily in response and her smile broadened.

“You are too kind, Miss Bennet. Now, come, come inside! Mrs. Reynolds is waiting for your maid and you must come with me! Lizzy tells me that we are very near in age, and I have been longing for a companion of similar years for so long! It has been quite dreary to be the youngest one in the house!” Georgiana pouted dramatically, a twinkle in her eye, and Kitty laughed lightly.

“It is a good thing that you will not wear that title for long. Soon enough your position will be usurped by a young gentleman!”

“I hope it is a young lady,” whispered Georgiana, but then she laughed and Kitty covered her mouth at the brashness of her new friend’s statement. Surely, she hoped for a boy as much as Lizzy and Mr. Darcy did.

Georgiana linked her arm through Kitty’s and pulled her out of the bright summer sunshine and into the welcoming darkness of Pemberley. The graceful stone walls kept the interior of the house cool in summer and warm in winter, and Kitty was grateful to be inside. As Mrs. Bennet had predicted, Kitty’s shoulders had begun to freckle, as had her nose, and she did not look forward to her mother’s ministrations when she returned to Longbourn.
